A Look Back at the Rod Run History: The Rod Run tradition began in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, during the 1970s, starting as an informal gathering organized by the Maryville car club, "Shades Of The Past." The event underwent its first major change in 1982 when it relocated to the Grand Hotel in Pigeon Forge, adopting the new name, The Grand Run.

The event evolved further in 1986, splitting into two separate events: The Grand Run, which continued at the Grand Hotel, and the Shades Of The Past, which found a new home. In 1991, MCS Promotions took the helm of The Grand Run, initially a single show in September, now known as the Fall Rod Run. The spring edition was introduced in 1995, and in 2014, both events were collectively rebranded as The Pigeon Forge Rod Run.
